In the 21st century – especially the last few years – there has been a conflict between innovation and everyday IT operations of a business. It is easy to get overwhelmed with trying to implement new technology, ensure that runs smoothly whilst introducing more tech.
Core systems need to run effectively. However, in parallel there is adoption of innovative technologies. According to the 2018 Insight Intelligent Technology Index, IT is perceived as a major cost for businesses. 79% of IT professionals mentioned the monitoring of budgets is a top technology concern for their business.
“Organisations have become acutely aware of the critical role technology now plays in overall business strategy, from enabling a more productive and connected workforce to increasing market share and customer loyalty,” says Emma de Sousa, UK managing director and vice-president of marketing for EMEA at Insight.
What IT Professionals are Saying
Have you felt like your IT department is being asked for too much? You are not the only one who thinks so.
According to Insight, 79% of IT decision makers felt there were not enough resources to effectively support the demand for innovation. In addition, 33% say innovation was expected of them despite existing processes, practices and business operations not evolving in ways that allowed them to do so.
Our ‘Beyond the Cloud’ 2018 Report corresponds with this research. Our prediction was that most UK businesses would have adopted emerging technologies. This is especially as we are living in an increasingly interconnected world. The most popular emerging technology was Artificial Intelligence with 34.1 actively using or planning deployment of the tech. However, 52.5% of respondents listed the reason for using emerging technology was for reduced cost.
This may be because clearly defined roles and responsibilities within IT organisations need to be introduced, the need for coordination higher up in the business, technical debt or business pressure.
“While we have been talking about the growing need for IT to both manage daily operations and be a strategic partner for transformation, many companies still have a long way to go when it comes to levelling the divide and creating a competitive advantage through innovation,” said de Sousa.
