Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)  are the most popular forms of digital virtualisation. 

With the unexpected change to remote working it has never been more important to ensure your organisation can maintain business continuity. It might be tempting to invest in the first software or service you see. Alternatively, looking at the different types of software might be overwhelming.

Here is a quick breakdown of these two different virtual desktops:

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

VDI is an on-site technology solution. It is the more established technology compared to DaaS.  DaaS is a more recent development with the cloud. This platform allows IT to outsource its desktops to a service provider.  
VDIs are centrally located so the IT team is responsible for them. Hardware, software, licensing and data are handled in-house. This is required for a highly sensitive computing environment. However, obtaining the correct licences can be expensive depending on your organisation’s needs and size.   DaaS is hosted in the cloud by a third-party organisation, like Amazon or Google. The hardware is managed by the provider. The IT department do not have to worry about housing the infrastructure, hardware breakdown or maintenance.  
VDIs require a skilled IT staff to handle contingencies. Any failures in hardware or software will need to be dealt with in-house. This has the potential to be expensive.   DaaS systems are subscription based so there is less reliance on the IT department. However, the initial price quote may not cover all of the expenses. Additionally, DaaS can be expensive depending on the services you require. 
Latency is minimal. However, it is less agile because upgrades need to be performed in-house. As all the data is also handled in-house, there needs to be threat detection solutions implemented to avoid data breaches.   Can be problems with latency, data hosting and regulations. This will cause problems with highly regulated fields. Trust is a major consideration when handing data to the DaaS provider as it needs to be stored securely.  
You can still work on the VDI platform without the internet.   DaaS relies on an internet connection so a service outage can affect a user’s ability to access their virtual desktop.
